In 2002 werd Susan Kigula schuldig bevonden aan de moord op haar man en vervolgens ter dood veroordeeld. Ze zat jaren in de dodencel zonder te weten wanneer (of of) het vonnis zou worden uitgevoerd. Achter de tralies studeerde ze rechten, daagde ze de staat uit en werd ze in 2019 vrijgelaten na jaren van procederen. Nu komt ze op voor de ter dood veroordeelden terwijl haar strijd tegen de doodstraf voortduurt.
Het evenement wordt ingeleid en gemodereerd door prof. Dhr. Jolande uit Beijerse (ESL), hoogleraar justitiële jeugdinterventies en universitair hoofddocent strafrecht. Na een korte inleiding op het thema geeft ze het woord aan Susan Kigula om haar verhaal te vertellen. Na afloop is er de mogelijkheid om vragen te stellen.
Fotograaf Jan Banning maakte foto's van terdoodveroordeelden en celcomplexen voor zijn serie Law & Order. Hij maakte portretten van Susan Kigula toen ze in de gevangenis zat en net na haar vrijlating.

Lecture by Susan Kigula
In 2002, Susan Kigula was found guilty of murdering her husband and subsequently sentenced to death. She spent years on death row without knowing when (or if) the sentence would be carried out. Behind bars, she studied law, challenged the state, and was released in 2019 after years of litigation. Now she stands up for those sentenced to death as her fight against the death penalty continues.
The event will be introduced and moderated by prof. mr. Jolande uit Beijerse (ESL), Professor of Judicial Youth Interventions and Associate Professor of Criminal Law. After a brief introduction to the theme, she will give the floor to Susan Kigula to tell her story. Afterwards, there will be the possibility to ask questions.
